But does money really make people more likely to lie, cheat and steal? New research released by the\u00a0<i>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/i>\u00a0says &#8220;yes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/cgi\/content\/short\/1118373109\" target=\"_blank\">Seven studies<\/a>\u00a0using experimental and naturalistic methods, reveal that upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals. In studies 1 and 2, upper-class individuals were more likely to break the law while driving, relative to lower-class individuals. In follow-up laboratory studies, upper-class individuals were also more likely to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>exhibit unethical decision-making tendencies (study 3),<\/li>\n<li>take valued goods from others (study 4),<\/li>\n<li>lie in a negotiation (study 5),<\/li>\n<li>cheat to increase their chances of winning a prize (study 6),<\/li>\n<li>and endorse unethical behavior at work (study 7) than were lower-class individuals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mediator and moderator data demonstrated that upper-class individuals\u2019 unethical tendencies are accounted for, in part, by their more favorable attitudes toward greed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.
