Tepco is struggling to contain the highly radioactive water that is seeping into the ocean near Fukushima. The head of Japan\u2019s NRA, Shinji Kinjo exclaimed,\u00a0\u201cright now, we have an emergency,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as he noted the\u00a0contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier<\/strong>\u00a0and is rising toward the surface \u2013 exceeding the limits of radioactive discharge. In a rather outspoken comment for the typically stoic Japanese, Kinjo said Tepco\u2019s \u201csense of crisis was weak,\u201d adding that \u201cthis is why you can\u2019t just leave it up to Tepco alone\u201d to grapple with the ongoing disaster.\u00a0As Reuters notes<\/a>, Tepco has been accused of covering up shortcomings and has been lambasted for its ineptness in the response and while the company says it is taking actions to contain the leaks, Kinjo fears if the water reaches the surface \u201cit would flow extremely fast,\u201d with some suggesting\u00a0as little as three weeks until this critical point<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Highly radioactive water seeping into the ocean from Japan\u2019s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is creating an \u201cemergency\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0that the operator is struggling to contain, an official from the country\u2019s nuclear watchdog said on Monday.<\/p>\n

This contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier<\/strong>, is rising toward the surface and is exceeding legal limits of radioactive discharge, Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force, told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Countermeasures planned by Tokyo Electric Power Co are only a temporary solution<\/strong>, he said.<\/p>\n

Tepco\u2019s \u201csense of crisis is weak,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Kinjo said. \u201cThis is why you can\u2019t just leave it up to Tepco alone\u201d to grapple with the ongoing disaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, we have an emergency,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
