{"id":17013,"date":"2015-05-15T03:44:53","date_gmt":"2015-05-15T10:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/?p=17013"},"modified":"2015-05-15T04:07:52","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T11:07:52","slug":"public-to-serve-as-guinea-pigs-for-robotic-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/public-to-serve-as-guinea-pigs-for-robotic-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Public to Serve as Guinea Pigs for Robotic Cars?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"story-body__h1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Google purpose-built robot cars tested on public roads<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_17014\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=17014\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17014\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17014\" class=\"wp-image-17014 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/googlecar.jpg\" alt=\"googlecar\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/googlecar.jpg 660w, http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/googlecar-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google&#8217;s purpose-built robots cars are getting the green light to drive on public roads.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This summer some of the self-driving cars will be tested on the roads around Mountain View, California, where the search giant is based.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before now, the small vehicles have only driven on test tracks and have not mixed with regular traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Google has tested autonomous vehicles on public roads but all of them have been heavily modified Lexus SUVs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The robot cars will not be completely autonomous, but will have safety drivers on board who can take over if needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;Every moment has been building towards putting these cars on the roads where we can start <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">learning<\/span> even more from them,&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> said Jaime Waydo, systems engineer in the self-driving project, in a video released to accompany <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/05\/self-driving-vehicle-prototypes-on-road.html\">the announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Eventually the purpose-built robot vehicles will not have a steering wheel or any other control<\/strong><\/span> though detachable versions will be used during the forthcoming road tests. The top speed of the cars will be capped at 25mph (40km\/h) during the tests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In preparation for their public debut, said Ms Waydo, the cars had been put through a series of demanding reliability and durability tests. Each vehicle has been clocking up thousands of miles each week on the test tracks &#8211; some of which resemble Californian highways and streets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mixing with real-life traffic will help Google engineers refine the on-board software to cope with many situations the cars have <strong>not<\/strong> encountered during testing,<\/span> <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/05\/self-driving-vehicle-prototypes-on-road.html\">said project head Chris Urmson in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17015\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=17015\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17015\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17015\" class=\"wp-image-17015 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/driverlesscar.gif\" alt=\"driverlesscar\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The UK has funded four projects to try out driverless cars<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;Getting these cars out in to the public and allowing people to react to them,<\/strong><\/span> allowing us to see them out there, that&#8217;s a huge deal and most importantly it&#8217;s the necessary step to getting them to drive themselves,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In addition, said Mr Urmson, the public test would let Google gauge how other road users react to the robot cars.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Figures released earlier this week show that four out of the 48 self-driving cars tested on public roads in California have been involved in accidents in the last eight months.
