What does that mean?\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nby Brooke Wolford (4-10-20)\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nPeople who were thought to have recovered from the coronavirus tested positive again, indicating that patients can relapse, South Korean officials say.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nSouth Korea reported nearly 7,000 COVID-19 recoveries, but after 91 patients re-tested positive, officials are worried it\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-southkorea\/south-korea-reports-recovered-coronavirus-patients-testing-positive-again-idUSKCN21S15X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">far more people will likely relapse as well<\/a>, Reuters reported. China also found more than 100 people, who were thought to have recovered,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article241177246.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;tested positive for the virus a second time<\/a>, revealing what could be a sinister global trend, McClatchy reported.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\u201cThe number will only increase, 91 is just the beginning now,\u201d Kim Woo-Joo, professor of infectious diseases at Korea University Guro Hospital, told Reuters.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nOfficials say that the virus likely \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-09\/coronavirus-may-reactivate-in-cured-patients-korean-cdc-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reactivated\u201d in coronavirus patients, rather than re-infecting them<\/a>, Bloomberg reported. A confirmed case of coronavirus is considered to be recovered after the patient tests negative for COVID-19 twice within 24 hours, according to Bloomberg.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\u201cWhile we are putting more weight on reactivation as the possible cause, we are conducting a comprehensive study on this,\u201d Jeong Eun-kyeong, director-general of the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Bloomberg. \u201cThere have been many cases when a patient during treatment will test negative one day and positive another.\u201d\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nAlthough the trend was also found in China back in mid-March, scientists believed that the second time patients tested positive for the virus was due to errors in testing and not reinfection, McClatchy reported.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\u201cIf you get an infection, your immune system is revved up against that virus,\u201d Dr. Keiji Fukuda, director of Hong Kong University\u2019s School of Public Health, told the Los Angeles Times. \u201cTo get re-infected again when you\u2019re in that situation would be quite unusual unless your immune system was not functioning right.\u201d\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nThat\u2019s why South Korean officials believe it\u2019s about reactivation, not reinfection, according to Reuters. But they also theorized that false test results could be to blame \u201cor remnants of the virus could still be in patients\u2019 systems but not be infectious or of danger to the host or others,\u201d Reuters reported.\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\nStill, the possibility of coronavirus patients relapsing is of international concern, since many countries hope previously infected patients will develop immunity, Reuters said.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coronavirus can \u2018reactivate\u2019 in recovered patients, experts say.
