estimated 350 and 700 tons \u2014 of toxic DDT in what they believe to be a long-forgotten waste site dating back to World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists at University of California San Diego\u2019s Scripps Institution of Oceanography&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2021-03-10\/ddt-seafloor-mapping-catalina-noaa-scripps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used underwater \u201cRoombas\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 drones with sonar technology \u2014 to trawl more than 36,000 acres of seabed between Catalina Island and the waters off the coast of Los Angeles, a region previously known to contain high levels of DDT in the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Images snapped during their search show 27,345 \u201cbarrel-like\u201d objects containing the insecticide,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/apr\/27\/up-to-25000-barrels-found-at-suspected-ddt-dump-off-california-say-scientists\" target=\"_blank\">the Associated Press now reports<\/a>, just 3,000 feet below the water\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Shipping logs dating back through the century show that Southern California\u2019s industry had used the area of seafloor as a dumping site until 1972, when the so-called Ocean Dumping Act went into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"http:\/\/amicuscuria.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DDT-Scripps-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"\" discovery \u201cstaggering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt really was a surprise to everybody who\u2019s worked with the data and who sailed at sea,\u201d said Terrill, the excursion\u2019s chief scientist, during a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>More testing is needed to confirm the presence of DDT and whether surrounding water, sediment and sea life has been contaminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/scripps.ucsd.edu\/news\/lake-tahoe-research-provides-new-insights-global-change\" target=\"_blank\">2015 study by Scripps<\/a>&nbsp;oceanographer and professor of geosciences Lihini Aluwihare first identified high amounts of DDT and other synthetic chemicals stored in the fat of deceased bottlenose dolphins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" shown to have multi-generational impacts in humans,\u201d said Aluwhihare, who was not involved in the recent barrel search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>First developed in the 1940s, DDT was originally used to ward off malaria, typhus and other insect-borne diseases in humans, as well as providing insect control for US crops. Bolstered by Rachel Carson\u2019s \u201cSilent Spring,\u201d a book that prompted widespread concern over the rampant use of manmade pesticides, the newly established Environmental Protection Agency&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ingredients-used-pesticide-products\/ddt-brief-history-and-status\" target=\"_blank\">ordered a stop to DDT<\/a>&nbsp;in 1972 following public outcry.
