In February of 1967, Oakland police officers stopped a car carrying Newton, Seale, and several other Panthers with rifles and handguns. When one officer asked to see one of the guns, Newton refused. \u201cI don\u2019t have to give you anything but my identification, name, and address,\u201d he insisted. This, too, he had learned in law school.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho in the hell do you think you are?\u201d an officer responded.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho in the hell do you think you are?,\u201d Newton replied indignantly. He told the officer that he and his friends had a legal right to have their firearms.<\/p>\n
Newton got out of the car, still holding his rifle.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you going to do with that gun?\u201d asked one of the stunned policemen.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you going to do with your gun?,\u201d Newton replied.<\/p>\n
NOTE:<\/strong> California’s legislature has since changed their Terry Stop laws. Your mileage in other states may vary. i.e. Don’t try this at home–you may be right, but dead right!
