J<\/em>azz was invented in 1902 by Jelly Roll Morton. Or, so Morton claimed to the editors of Ripley\u2019s ‘Believe It Or Not’. They believed it.<\/h3>\n

Ever since, this music has found itself at the center of controversy. The great pianist, Ignacy Paderewski, called it \u201ca terrible revenge by the culture of the Negroes on that of the whites.\u201d In the 1920\u2019s, the editor of ‘The Etude’ linked jazz to America\u2019s crime rate. Russia\u2019s Maxim Gorky described it in terms of \u201cwild screaming, hissing, rattling, wailing, moaning, cackling.\u201d \u201cBestial cries are heard,\u201d he wrote; \u201cNeighing horses, the squeal of a brass pig, crying jackasses, amorous quacks of a monstrous toad\u2026\u201d John Philip Sousa charged that \u201cSome of it makes you want to bite your grandmother.\u201d<\/h3>\n
