Lauderdale News, Weather, Deco<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>by Carlos Miller<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Broward County, FL<\/strong> &#8212; Broward County sheriff\u2019s deputy Paul Pletcher was off-duty when he got into a road rage altercation with an Hispanic woman, so he pulled her over, stormed up to her truck and began berating her.<\/p>\n<p>Her passenger pulled out a cell phone and began video recording, clearly capturing him saying, \u201cgive me the phone,\u201d three times before reaching into the vehicle and snatching the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Pletcher then drove off, smashing the phone in a nearby parking lot, where it was later retrieved by Plantation police officer, whom were responding to the woman\u2019s call.<\/p>\n<p>Pletcher was eventually arrested and charged with several felonies where he is facing 11 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>His trial began this week.<\/p>\n<p>His defense: He thought the phone was a concealed weapon, which caused him to fear for his life.<\/p>\n<p>That &#8216;fear&#8217; is evident from the recovered video, which captured the following exchange:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cGive me the phone!\u201d he repeated, reaching into the car and toward the camera lens.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cNo talking to me like that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cGive me the phone, Now!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cDon\u2019t touch me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cGive me the phone!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cWait! Wait!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the visual and audio evidence against him that he was committing strong-armed robbery, his attorney is still able to look the jury in the eye and state the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201dPaul Pletcher saw somebody who was driving erratically \u2026 Paul Pletcher took the position that when that cell phone was out and being used it could have been a concealed weapon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pletcher has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/02\/01\/paul-pletcher-road-rage_n_1247354.html\" target=\"_blank\">gotten away with stealing cameras<\/a>\u00a0from citizens before, so he is confident he will get away with this crime, especially considering it took authorities seven months to charge him after the 2011 incident and<a href=\"http:\/\/photographyisnotacrime.com\/2012\/09\/21\/broward-deputy-fired-more-than-a-year-after-stealing-womans-cell-phone\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0more than a year to fire him<\/a>, which might explain his smirking mugshot and his celebratory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/paul.pletcher.7\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page.<\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Paul Pletcher\" src=\"http:\/\/photographyisnotacrime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Paul-Pletcher.jpg\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">ex-deputy Paul Pletcher<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Paul Pletcher robs latinos, while disparaging their Spanish, to seize and destroy cell phone evidence of his misconduct.
