WSBA\u00a0Board of Governors maintain consistent position; vote to support R-74<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the Sept. 20 WSBA Board meeting, the WSBA (Washington State Bar Association) Board of Governors voted to support the \u201cYES\u201d campaign on R-74, which would uphold\u00a0Senate Bill 6239\u00a0<\/strong>passed by the Legislature in February 2012, allowing civil marriage for same-sex couples.<\/div>\n

The decision to endorse R-74 is based on the following principles:<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u2022\u00a0Lawyers are charged with protecting and promoting the rights of our clients within the framework of the law;
\n\u2022\u00a0Predictability and fairness in the laws that protect property rights, parental rights and access to the justice system are necessary if lawyers are to fulfill their duties to their clients and serve the interests of justice; and
\n\u2022\u00a0Equal access to the rights and responsibilities of civil legal marriage is a matter both of justice and the orderly administration of justice.<\/strong><\/div>\n

The decision to endorse R-74 is consistent with the\u00a0resolution<\/a>\u00a0the WSBA Board of Governors adopted in 2008.<\/div>\n
