FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) \u2014 The shootout that left one Alabama deputy sheriff dead and another in critical condition on Saturday began when they checked on a man at his mobile home and he opened fire on them, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Baldwin County Sheriff\u00a0Huey Mack<\/a>\u00a0told AL.com (http:\/\/bit.ly\/TcX1yC<\/a>\u00a0) that gunfire erupted Friday after\u00a0Michael Jansen<\/a>\u00a0pulled a handgun on Deputy\u00a0Scott Ward<\/a>\u00a0and his colleagues outside of Jansen’s Fairhope-area home.<\/p>\n Ward was fatally wounded after responding about 4 p.m. with two other deputies to a family disturbance call at the residence. Deputies returned fire, killing Jansen.<\/p>\n Ward, 47, was transported by helicopter to\u00a0University of South Alabama Medical Center<\/a>\u00a0in Mobile, where he was pronounced dead. The second deputy remained in critical condition at the same hospital Saturday afternoon. The third deputy was not hurt.<\/p>\n Mack did not release the names of the two surviving deputies.<\/p>\n Jansen, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" FAIRHOPE, Ala.
