The following excerpt from Bloomberg.com misses the mark by failing to mention the real LOSERS in the ‘win:win’ financial equation described below. \u00a0While it may be true that the liars AND the buyers make a ‘profit’ by distorting the facts in a Cap and Trade market, the true victims of the fraud are\u00a0air breathers<\/strong> witnessing the ‘privatization’ of the air itself, the last great\u00a0commons<\/strong> being destroyed before our eyes. \u00a0That giant sucking noise you hear is the breath being ripped from our lungs. \u00a0Nothing will be left unsoiled by the hand of corporate greed.<\/p>\n

Carbon Credits at Work<\/p><\/div>\n

\u2018Pseudo-Commodity\u2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joseph Mason<\/a>, a banking professor at Louisiana State University who specializes in financial crises, says carbon is unique because it isn\u2019t backed by a commodity such as gold or oil that can be seen and touched. Carbon credits get their value with people having faith in them, he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really are setting up a market from scratch here for this hybridized pseudo-commodity of our own making,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Anything that raises doubts about the integrity of emissions reductions could potentially damage the market, Mason says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re selling oil, you\u2019re actually transferring something tangible,\u201d says\u00a0Gregg Marland<\/a>, a staff scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s\u00a0Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf somebody lies, somebody loses,\u201d he says. \u201cIn a CO2 transaction, you can lie and both win.\u201d The seller gets paid, and the buyer has his credit for compliance. \u201cWe\u2019re going to create a situation where both sides can win by cheating,\u201d Marland says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
