There will also be music, a really free market, and free food.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 655px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Wall Street Bail Out\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-ash4\/486592_101988339991894_259109126_n.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whose Streets?<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ancient Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>May Day (on May 1st) is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival, often a public holiday.<\/p>\n<p>May Day is related to the\u00a0<a title=\"Celt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celt\">Celtic<\/a>\u00a0festival of\u00a0<a title=\"Beltane\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beltane\">Beltane<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Germanic peoples\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germanic_peoples\">Germanic<\/a>\u00a0festival of\u00a0<a title=\"Walpurgis Night\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walpurgis_Night\">Walpurgis Night<\/a>. May Day falls exactly half a year from November 1, another\u00a0<a title=\"Cross-quarter day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cross-quarter_day\">cross-quarter day<\/a>\u00a0which is also associated with various northern European\u00a0<a title=\"Paganism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paganism\">pagan<\/a>\u00a0and the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>As Europe became\u00a0<a title=\"Christian\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian\">Christianized<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Paganism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paganism\">pagan<\/a>\u00a0holidays lost their religious character and either changed into popular secular celebrations, as with May Day, or were\u00a0<a title=\"Syncretism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syncretism#Religious_syncretism\">merged with<\/a>\u00a0or replaced by new Christian holidays as with\u00a0<a title=\"Christmas\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christmas\">Christmas<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Easter\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter\">Easter<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Pentecost\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pentecost\">Pentecost<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"All Saint's Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_Saint%27s_Day\">All Saint&#8217;s Day<\/a>. In the twentieth and continuing into the twenty-first century, many\u00a0<a title=\"Neopaganism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neopaganism\">neopagans<\/a>\u00a0began reconstructing the old traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival again.<\/p>\n<p>May Day was also celebrated by some early European settlers of the\u00a0<a title=\"Americas\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Americas\">American<\/a>\u00a0continent. In some parts of the\u00a0<a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>, May Baskets are made. These are small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone&#8217;s doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away. The person receiving the basket tries to catch the fleeing giver. If they catch the person, a kiss is exchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Modern May Day ceremonies in the U.S. vary greatly from region to region and many unite both the holiday&#8217;s &#8220;Green Root&#8221; (pagan) and &#8220;Red Root&#8221; (labor) traditions.<\/p>\n<p>May 1st is also recognized in the U.S. as\u00a0<a title=\"Law Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_Day\">Law Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>International Workers Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>International Workers&#8217; Day<\/b>\u00a0(also known as\u00a0<b>May Day<\/b>) is a celebration of the international\u00a0<a title=\"Labour movement\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labour_movement\">labor movement<\/a>. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries.<\/p>\n<p>International Workers&#8217; Day commemorates the 1886\u00a0<a title=\"Haymarket affair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haymarket_affair\">Haymarket affair<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Chicago\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\">Chicago<\/a>. The police there were trying to disperse a public assembly during a general strike for the\u00a0<a title=\"Eight-hour day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eight-hour_day\">eight-hour workday<\/a>, when, according to some accounts, an unidentified person threw a bomb at them. The police reacted by shooting unarmed workers, killing dozens of demonstrators and several of their own officers. Reliable witnesses testified all the pistol flashes came from the center of the street where the police were standing, and none from the crowd. Moreover, initial newspaper reports made no mention of firing by civilians. A telegraph pole at the scene was filled with bullet holes, all coming from the direction of the police.<sup id=\"cite_ref-William_Ward.2C_Capt._3rd_Prect_report_4-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Workers%27_Day#cite_note-William_Ward.2C_Capt._3rd_Prect_report-4\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1889, the first congress of the\u00a0<a title=\"Second International\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_International\">Second International<\/a>, meeting in\u00a0<a title=\"Paris\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\">Paris<\/a>\u00a0for the centennial of the\u00a0<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Exposition Universelle (1889)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exposition_Universelle_(1889)\">Exposition Universelle<\/a>, following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests.\u00a0<strong>May Day<\/strong> was formally recognized as an annual event at the International&#8217;s second congress in 1891.<sup><br \/>\n<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the\u00a0<a title=\"May Day Riots of 1894\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/May_Day_Riots_of_1894\">May Day Riots of 1894<\/a>\u00a0occurred. In 1904, the International Socialist Conference meeting in\u00a0<a title=\"Amsterdam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amsterdam\">Amsterdam<\/a>\u00a0called on &#8220;all\u00a0<a title=\"Social democracy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_democracy\">Social Democratic<\/a>\u00a0Party organizations and\u00a0<a title=\"Trade unions\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trade_unions\">trade unions<\/a>\u00a0of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace.&#8221; The congress made it &#8220;mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Workers%27_Day#cite_note-6\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In many countries, the\u00a0<a title=\"Working class\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Working_class\">working classes<\/a>\u00a0sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. <strong>May Day<\/strong> has long been a focal point for\u00a0<a title=\"Demonstration (people)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demonstration_(people)\">demonstrations<\/a>\u00a0by various\u00a0<a title=\"Socialism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socialism\">socialist<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Communist\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communist\">communist<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Anarchism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anarchism\">anarchist<\/a>\u00a0groups. In some circles,\u00a0<a title=\"Bonfire\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonfire\">bonfires<\/a>\u00a0are lit in commemoration of the\u00a0<a title=\"Haymarket martyrs\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haymarket_martyrs\">Haymarket martyrs<\/a>, usually at dawn.\u00a0<strong>May Day<\/strong> has been an important official holiday in countries such as the\u00a0<a title=\"People's Republic of China\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/People%27s_Republic_of_China\">People&#8217;s Republic of China<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"North Korea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Korea\">North Korea<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Cuba\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuba\">Cuba<\/a>\u00a0and the former\u00a0<a title=\"Soviet Union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\">Soviet Union<\/a>. <strong>May Day<\/strong> celebrations typically feature elaborate popular and military parades in these countries.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is\u00a0<a title=\"Labor Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day\">Labor Day<\/a>\u00a0in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the\u00a0<a title=\"Knights of Labor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knights_of_Labor\">Knights of Labor<\/a>, who organized the first parade in\u00a0<a title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>. After the Haymarket Massacre, US President\u00a0<a title=\"Grover Cleveland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grover_Cleveland\">Grover Cleveland<\/a>\u00a0feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus he moved in 1887 to support the Labor Day that the Knights supported.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Workers%27_Day#cite_note-8\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1955, the\u00a0<a title=\"Catholic Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>\u00a0dedicated May 1 to &#8220;<a title=\"Saint Joseph\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Joseph\">Saint Joseph<\/a>\u00a0The Worker&#8221;. The Catholic Church considers Saint Joseph the patron saint of (among others) workers and craftsmen.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Saint_Joseph_9-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Workers%27_Day#cite_note-Saint_Joseph-9\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Far-right governments have traditionally sought to repress the message behind International Workers&#8217; Day, with fascist governments in Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain abolishing the workers&#8217; holiday.
