Rogue Reflections Plumbs the Depth of Auburn Police

As an avowed (A)narchist, Drew Hendricks nevertheless Rogue Reflections appears to have a refined knowledge of Constitutional boundaries and the civil rights of citizens as shown here in the video clip he posted to Youtube while gauging the reactions of the Auburn, WA police.

[Editor’s Note: The above retraction is issued due to the error of incorrectly attributing it to Drew Hendricks instead of ‘Rogue Reflections’ after some fact checking when Mr. Hendricks denied having anything to do with the above video. It’s something of a shame as it makes the photographer look almost heroic defending the 1st and 2nd Amendment at the same time in stark contrast to Mr. Hendrick’s usual predilection for ‘snitch’ hunts.]

Rogue Reflections w/Seattle Police

AUBURN, WA — On 11 FEB 2014, I was filming various parts of Auburn, WA, when I noticed what appeared to be a Security Police Officer filming me from inside the Auburn Justice Center. Being naturally curious myself, I started filming him. Three Auburn police officers then approached,  eventually joined by a 4th.  I believe, overall, this was a relatively positive interaction. They were curious about what they perceived as “suspicious activity” and approached me. They did not DEMAND ID, nor was I arrested, and no use of force was initiated against me. They did not observe illegal activity and they did not manufacture probable cause or reasonable suspicion. I must say I appreciated the dialogue, as it made for a more interesting video. I expect a few verbal jabs, when I’m out shooting public photos and videos. I will jab back a little. It makes things a bit more dynamic. In the end, they honored the oaths they took. I will never fault an officer if he/she is staying true to their sworn oath to the Constitution.

[Note: The following video *DOES* show Andrew Hendricks in it.]

  1. Bad journalism, sloppy and misinformed. I did not shoot the video you attribute to me, I did not “post it to Youtube” and I am not the person named – clearly – as having done so. I shared this video on my facebook, and that is all I ever did. You apparently thought that I would have to be the person who did this in order to share it on Facebook, which I find hilarious and silly.

It certainly sounded like you, Drew. Are you claiming you didn’t engage with the Auburn Police in that video clip? If you’re telling the truth, that’s too bad, because it makes you look uncommonly good. It’s possible there’s someone who sounds like you and openly carries. Actually, the tip received about the clip came from another journalist in the Olympia area identifing YOU as the author. It’s entirely possible, if you like and insist you are NOT the author, to put your denial adjacent to the article and video clip. If you’re dissembling, your p@ls will know. It DOES sound like you and others believe it’s you as well. So, to you want to reiterate your denial. This isn’t YOU interacting with the Auburn Police in the video clip? Just confirm this as your denial and a retraction based on it will accompany the piece.

What a shame–you never looked so patriotic previously.

    • Thanks again for thinking well enough of me to confuse my work with Rogue’s work, which is awesome. But your statement that we sound alike is just off base, as he points out in his own comment. Also, I have not lived in the Seattle / Tacoma / Auburn area for a couple of years now and rarely get down there with enough time to risk arrest or getting shot by filming bored police while open carrying. There is a strange double standard in our country when it comes to the Second Amendment, and having likely been on the “Domestic Terrorist” list means I cannot effectively exercise those rights, even absent a felony conviction (or even a felony charge, for that matter). Some day will be able to post my short clip of being told to turn off my camera in Pierce County Court in 2010 – but not until that litigation is over.

When I do post video on YouTube it is rarely footage I shot, and I am usually either the “talent” in front of the camera or the public records researcher passing along some public record footage shot by the WSP Cessna or the WSP Detectives.

Rogue’s work is awesome, but not for the feint hearted (especially the open carry)–filming LEO’s is dangerous enough…@narchists too.

Even though it’s not an RCW, Washington’s Court rules require a judge’s permission to film/photograph or record in their courtroom. For a court of record where the proceedings are supposed to be public, this sux big time. The specious reasoning is based on 20th century technology where such activity could/would be distracting to a jury. Today, recording can be done surreptitiously. Still, they can (and do) prosecute you for criminal contempt if found violating those court rules. I’ve been lucky. I was sternly questioned by a judge for recording in her courtroom without having sought her permission 1st. I demurred by observing I could have PURCHASED the audio of the proceedings from the clerk. She recognized me (since I live in her community) as a citizen photojournalist and let me slide with a warning not to do it again. She’s never denied me the opportunity to record when I sought her permission in advance. It still sux. The public/press should be able as a matter of right to unobtrusively record the proceedings. Thurston County courts are especially bad in this regard.

Personally, I’d like to see that court rule overturned so long as the recording wasn’t obtrusive, disruptive, or distracting.

  3. Drew does not sound like me. LOL. Thank you for establishing the proper credit for my video (the Auburn one.) Keep up the good work guys.

  4. As I wrote at length on Olyblog at the time, the photography rule in that court was already suspended at the time i attempted some, there being three full sized teevee news cameras in the front and center, one in use. The reporter on the bench in front of me used his cell phone to take a picture… I was singled out for special attention and asked to leave or else be arrested.
