She and her comrades coaxed members of the SS into traps where they would be executed
She was 14 when she joined the Dutch resistance, though with her long, dark hair in braids she looked at least two years younger.
When she rode her bicycle down the streets of Haarlem in North Holland, firearms hidden in a basket, Nazi officials rarely stopped to question her. When she walked through the woods, serving as a lookout or leading her SS target to a secluded place, there was little indication that she carried a handgun and was preparing an execution.
The Dutch resistance was widely believed to be a man’s effort in a man’s war. If women were involved, the thinking went, they were likely doing little more than handing out anti-German pamphlets or newspapers.
Yet Freddie Oversteegen and her sister Truus, two years her senior, were rare exceptions – a pair of teenage women who took up arms against Nazi occupiers and Dutch “traitors” on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
With Hannie Schaft, a onetime law student with fiery red hair, they sabotaged bridges and rail lines with dynamite, shot Nazis while riding their bikes, and donned disguises to smuggle Jewish children across the country and sometimes out of concentration camps.
In perhaps their most daring act, they lured their targets in taverns or bars, asked if they wanted to “go for a stroll” in the forest – and “liquidated” them, as Oversteegen put it, with a pull of the trigger.
Freddie Oversteegen, the last remaining member of the Netherlands’ most famous female resistance cell, died one day before her 93rd birthday. She was living in a nursing home in Driehuis, five miles from Haarlem, and had suffered several heart attacks in recent years, Jeroen Pliester, chairman of the National Hannie Schaft Foundation, said.“We had to do it,” she told one interviewer. “It was a necessary evil, killing those who betrayed the good people.” When asked how many people she had killed or helped kill, she demurred: “One should not ask a soldier any of that.”
The organization was founded by Oversteegen’s sister in 1996 to promote the legacy of Schaft, who was captured and executed by the Nazis weeks before the end of Second World War. “Schaft became the national icon of female resistance,” Pliester said, a martyr whose story was taught to schoolchildren across the Netherlands and memorialized in a 1981 movie, The Girl With the Red Hair, which took its title from her nickname.
Oversteegen served as a board member in her sister’s organization. But she “decided to be a little bit out of the limelight,” Pliester said, and was sometimes overshadowed by Schaft and Truus, the group’s leader.
“I have always been a little jealous of her because she got so much attention after the war,” Oversteegen told Vice Netherlands in 2016, referring to her sister. “But then I’d just think, ‘I was in the resistance as well.’”
It was, she said, a source of pride and of pain – a five-year experience that she never regretted, but that came to haunt her in peacetime. Late at night, unable to fall asleep, she sometimes recalled the words of an old battle song that served as an anthem for her and her sister: “We have carried the best to their graves/ torn and fired at, beaten till the blood ran/ surrounded by the executioners on the scaffold and jail/ but the raging of the enemy doesn’t frighten us.”
Freddie Nanda Oversteegen was born in the village of Schoten, now part of Haarlem, in the Twenties. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and Freddie and Truus were raised primarily by their mother, a communist who instilled a sense of social responsibility in the young girls; she eventually remarried and had a son.
In interviews with anthropologist Ellis Jonker, collected in the 2014 book Under Fire: Women and World War II, Freddie Oversteegen recalled that their mother encouraged them to make dolls for children suffering in the Spanish Civil War, and beginning in the early 1930s volunteered with International Red Aid, a kind of communist Red Cross for political prisoners around the world.
Although living in poverty, sleeping on makeshift mattresses stuffed with straw, the family took in refugees from Germany and Amsterdam, including a Jewish couple and a mother and son who lived in their attic. After German forces invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the couples were moved to another location; Jewish community leaders feared a potential raid, because of the family’s well-known political leanings.
“They were all deported and murdered,” Oversteegen told Jonker. “We never heard from them again. It still moves me dreadfully, whenever I talk about it.”
Oversteegen and her sister began their resistance careers by distributing pamphlets (“The Netherlands have to be free!”) and hanging anti-Nazi posters (“For every Dutch man working in Germany, a German man will go to the front!”). Their efforts apparently attracted the attention of Frans van der Wiel, commander of the underground Haarlem Council of Resistance, who invited them to join his team – with their mother’s permission.
“Only later did he tell us what we’d actually have to do: sabotage bridges and railway lines,” Truus Oversteegen said, according to Jonker. “We told him we’d like to do that. ‘And learn to shoot, to shoot Nazis,’ he added. I remember my sister saying, ‘Well, that’s something I’ve never done before.’”
By Truus’ account, it was Freddie Oversteegen who became the first to shoot and kill someone.“It was tragic and very difficult and we cried about it afterwards,” Truus said. “We did not feel it suited us – it never suits anybody, unless they are real criminals… One loses everything. It poisons the beautiful things in life.”
The Oversteegen sisters were officially part of a seven-person resistance cell, which grew to include an eighth member, Schaft, after she joined in 1943. But the three girls worked primarily as a stand-alone unit, Pliester said, acting on instructions from the Council of Resistance.
After the war ended in 1945, Truus worked as an artist, making paintings and sculptures inspired by her years with the resistance, and wrote a popular memoir, Not Then, Not Now, Not Ever. She died in 2016, two years after prime minister Mark Rutte awarded the sisters the Mobilisation War Cross, a military honor for service in the Second World War.
For her part, Freddie Oversteegen told Vice that she coped with the traumas of the war “by getting married and having babies”. She married Jan Dekker, taking the name Freddie Dekker-Oversteegen, and raised three children. They survive her, as do her half brother and four grandchildren. Her husband, who worked at the steel company Hoogovens, is deceased.
In interviews, Oversteegen often spoke of the physics of killing – not the feel of the trigger or kick of the gun, but the inevitable collapse that followed, her victims’ fall to the ground.
“Yes,” she told one interviewer, according to the Dutch newspaper IJmuider Courant, “I’ve shot a gun myself and I’ve seen them fall. And what is inside us at such a moment? You want to help them get up.”

Olympia, WA (9-23-18) — Kirsten M. Harris is a radical Olympia homeless advocate who believes it is government’s duty to provide all homeless people with a home/house as their basic ‘right’. When, as kindly but rationally as possible, challenged for this assertion. Kirsten began to disintegrate, censor and threaten soon thereafter, especially when it was argued such censorship was a double standard given the whining among the same radical elements when THEIR/HER 1st Amendment rights were abrogated.
One confidante has, in the past, recommended a check to see if girlfriends are sane. While Kirsten (DOB: 3-5-71) is hardly a gf, it’s still a prudent suggestion not to be imprudently ignored, case in point.
As a result of her unyielding (and only partially published here) DV predilections, Kirsten (self advertised Queen of ANTIFA) inadvertently evolved into the subject of this story, which started out with the intention of interviewing and taping Oly’s homeless in her company (well known to them) for introductions. It quickly went downhill after that following the coverage of the 9-11-18 demonstrations protesting the closure of the City’s artesian downtown park, etc. in front of City Hall Tuesday evening. Kirsten, revealed she is persona non-grata among virtually all of Olympia’s homeless advocate organizations due to her violent/obscene rhetoric, threats, interference, and behavior. They have asserted she is a violent personality. WSP criminal background check reveals that while Kirsten has no felony convictions, she has a long list/pattern of gross misdemeanor convictions for assault, domestic violence, harassment, and drunk driving. Her rhetoric is vile, deliberately pugnacious, and threatening.
The exchanges can be cut and pasted here upon request, but are just the tip of the iceberg. Kirsten continues to gaslight, e-mail threats, while simultaneously alleging she’s being harassed/stalked. There’s no basis for that under WA law, of course, but much of the public has come to believe our State’s anti-harassment laws are intended to relieve them of being annoyed/irked as lazy judges tend to rubber stamp every anti-harassment ex parte petition. Thus Washington’s anti-harassment proceedings have become the cesspool of its jurisprudence and the very instrument of the harassment it was intended to discourage.
Kirsten is small potatoes, but even the mentally/emotionally unstable have recognized Washington’s anti-harassment proceedings as a convenient cudgel with which to threaten others and interfere with 1st Amendment rights. And, THAT is the gist of this story because our legislature and judges have created a problem with the potential to affect everyone.
In Kirsten’s case the intimidation includes thinly veiled threats of ‘street justice’ should any attempt be made to engage or interview/photograph Olympia’s swelling downtown street encampments…a clear attempt to deny 1st Amendment rights (publishing/documenting).

OLYMPIA (2-17-20) — A storm of e-mails has inundated this blog (mostly from Kirsten Harris) objecting to the factual contents of this article based on Kirsten’s false narrative of it and a failure of its critics to actually read it, providing carte blanche to a hysterically violent domestic abuser and drunk driver with a history of assaults, both as the defendant and plaintiff stretching back over 30 years. At least one of the harshest critics was brought low in the community by his very own (Ava) drama Queen’s bare uncorroborated assertions after their romantic involvement.
To that end, this article is intended to serve as a warning to guys (or gals) to make certain their GF’s are sane and avoid the drama queens. The court documents included here provide substance to that argument and speak for themselves to those with eyes to see, ears to hear, and common sense. Unfortunately, many community activists have a Don Quixote complex and are too obtuse to recognize the obvious or avoid an open manhole. This publication ignores advice from fools and the damned. The majority of you sat silent, and continued to plan condos, move murals, build an ice skating rink while people were, and are, dying daily. Your actions were amoral.

And your response is to vilify them, and claim you are frightened, because someone “shoved papers at you?” Lady-you were being served. Not threatened. Not assaulted. You were served. Legally. Your response is nothing short of reprehensible, exaggerating the threat level when there was none, attempting to manipulate the law when no assault had taken place, then Simmons closes the commons; What an overt way to punish the little guy, to show them all to not EVER attempt to approach you, hold you accountable, to not ever DARE attempt to exercise their rights as American Citizens under U.S. Constitutional law. Instead, you call them aggressive? And seek to press charges? Because they are simply wanting to exist, to survive? And…Why do you respond by not responding at all? Because you are a business owner, and your position is a conflict if interest. Because you cater to the wealthy. You are Democrats like Hitler was a Socialist.
The recent Federal Court ruling that has firmly bound your greedy inhumane hands, was nothing short of pure joy for me. Now everyone can see the horror and the heartbreak of what advocates and service providers have been living with for years, without adequate help from City Leaders. And now, you are powerless to sweep it away.
I have been contacting Civil Attorneys since that landmark ruling that are poised to represent our Street Community and litigate against the City if you choose to break the recently established law. The City Attorneys searching desperately for a loophole around this do not stand against a Federal 9th Circuit Court judicial ruling. Talk about turning the tables!
These people will continue to amass in the DTO area and yes, commerce will suffer- it will screech to a halt. You shoved them into the woods and under bridges, we are bringing them out! The same business owners and interests that you have been in bed with to your personal benefits, will come screaming for you- where once they shouted just “get them out”, they will be screeching “house them!!!”… And you will have no choice but to do just that. And I love it.
You had no moral justification for allowing this. And I think you should all be investigated. You are either blind, ignorant, or filled with turpitude, but somehow, someway, there was a pay off. There was a benefit to you, or your donors. Anyone in power who reacts to basic overwhelming human need and crisis, including our unhoused children this way, needs to vacate their offices. You do not represent Olympia, or its Mission Statement.

Paul Simmons. You are a liar. Your statement that the well lot had to be closed for the safety of your staff is nothing short of ludicrous, when you also admitted you had not asked nor required of them to file police reports over these “death threats”, and upon talking to police, I was informed that your park rangers had in fact stated to police they were not in fear of their lives, nor did they did want any police action taken. You also claimed you made that closure decision unilaterally, that it was YOUR decision to make-however your police department refutes that claim. So who is being dishonest here? Who is stretching the truth? Who is lying? You, or the Olympia Police Department? How much money did it take to beautify the Artesian Well? How much money did you pay for extra law enforcement foot patrols? Just to have you declare the area unsafe, two blocks from city hall, with cameras surrounding, with additional patrolling officers? What a way to insult your Police Department! I guess they were just too inept to meet the danger that resided there… And you also made sure you did not trouble over-serving bar owners, who contribute to this problem. Because “business owners and politicians of a feather…” What you did, along with Hall and Selby and City Attorneys, is you retaliated on the unhoused, and you recklessly created a crisis for service providers when you did so with no warning, as well as a crisis for homeless people with no where to go. You also closed off one of the only avenues we had of finding missing unhoused people, as the well was a necessary and known gathering place. Nothing you did was in human interest, except your cronies and your own!
And the bathroom issue. I think a lawsuit is in order. In addition to criminalizing the homeless/poor, what about the egregious public bathroom policies imposed through this administrative regime in Olympia? The city is unlawfully discriminating on the basis of gender. And it occurs to me that it is a violation of human/civil rights to cite the homeless for urinating and defecating on public streets when the city locks all public bathrooms within a practical distance and commercial businesses do likewise, even to the inconvenience of customers! This results in outbreaks of hepatitis and other serious and lethal public health threats, as we have seen in San Diego! You are creating, you are 100% responsible for it, should a public health crisis occur, and one is imminent!
How disgusting it took a Federal Court to force you to do the right thing and stop traumatizing suffering people. How disgusting you knew the magnitude of suffering and ignored it, opting for development projects that catered to the wealthy only. How disgusting (Cheryl Selby) you came here to “seek advantages.” Well you have certainly taken advantage, haven’t you?

Oh, Really? Kind of like your emergency measures in June to address the crisis? And you havent done a damn thing except collect paychecks?
By breaking the backs of churches, volunteers, and all service providers by creating an inhumane and passive, non responsive, non supportive atmosphere, while the trauma, suffering, and death toll climbed, you sloughed off your responsibility onto an already fragile, threadbare resource community. You used them. You used them until there was nearly nothing left. You created municipal codes and then enforced them instead. You withheld essential life saving resources, knowing this past summer was estimated to be the hottest on record! Now winter is upon us! What have you done? How much have money have you blown on task forces that go nowhere? How many Homelessness Response Coordinators at what cost should be hired? Evergreen Christian pays $100,000.00 for three years to the tune of $300,000.00 FOR WHAT? Whats Tacoma looking like? We see more children. More elderly, more physically ill, more mentally ill, more amputees, more heat stroke, more frostbite, more depression, more addiction, and you avert your cowardly eyes and ignore the issue, unless you are criminalizing them, harming them, while you claim you represent MY Olympia? If you cannot stand with the least of us, you are not qualified to hold your positions, posing as if you are the best. You are morally, ethically, and intellectually irresponsible.
Look around you. Do you like what you see? I certainly hope so. Because ultimately, this is your legacy. And your names are written all over it. And this is how history will remember you.
Olympia, WA (9-14-18) — The Olympia Artesian Rumble Arkestra is a loose knit non-hierarchal group of kindred souls who like to get together and jam every Friday adjacent to the kissing statue at Percival Landing. (4th Ave NW & Water St NW) just for the fun of it from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
They, along with the Peace Vigil, have been doing so for years. The musical talent comes in assorted shapes, sizes, ages, genders, and abilities. No one is turned away or discouraged. Generally, a good time is had by all and it isn’t uncommon to see them perform in the rain.
Hence, the strength and ability of the arkestra ebbs and flows. But it is always absolutely real.
Olympia, WA (9-14-18) — 2 passenger vehicles were totaled in a major collision just after 4:00 pm in the triple 4th Ave-Pacific Hwey-Martin Way intersection Friday. Traffic was rerouted around the blocked trisection.
The photos reveal the unibody construction is vulnerable to complete disintegration in even non-fatal collisions, unlike the heavier framed vehicles of yesteryear. Both drivers appeared to be speaking on their cell phones after the collision. The cause/fault leading to it is presently unknown, but under investigation. No ambulances were seen at the scene.
These clips captured performing artist ‘Cool Breeze’ (AKA: Connie Bunyer) of Olympia @ Farmers Market on 9–14-18 a little after noon during her set onstage.
Connie had charming stage demeanor, a pretty face, a nice stage getup, a strong voice that hit the notes in the standards she chose to perform accompanied by her ukulele and accordion. She had good rhythm, but was a little weak on the fingering…plus she admittedly knew no Cajun tunes for the squeeze box.
The audience was sparse but loved and tipped her generously. It’s always tough for a solo artist to hold the audience’s attention. Her best styles mimicked a french chanteuse and Latina. AND…she has sea tales!

Oympia, WA (9-11-18) -Yvonne McDonald, 56, was found unconscious on Division Street Northwest on Aug. 7, 2018. Her murder remains unsolved and Olympia residents have begun to protest the slow pace of the investigation into the crime, suggesting the murder of a black woman is receiving a lower priority than the hunt for the area’s serial cat killer.
The NO ON ‘MISSING MIDDLE’ neighborhood advocates hostile to massive zoning changes showed up at Tuesday’s City Council meeting in force, as did supporters of Yvonne’s grieving family. Their heartfelt pleas telling the Council of the emotional trauma her family continued to endure over her unsolved murder brought many listeners to tears.
The hearing room was maxed out, as was the lobby and even the large outdoor entry portico to city hall. Cee Davis, a current candidate running for 22nd District State Representative arrived too late to hear the testimony which had provoked so many tears. His inadvertent but inherent flippancy caused a stir and confrontation wherein threats were made against his person. He is running as a fiscal conservative, advocate for private property rights, and Constitutionalist focused on the issues rather than identity politics.
The Missing Middle opponents appeared to lose ground as the Council racked up a plethora of votes clearing the way for ultimate passage of the extensive zoning changes which would allow for profound fundamental changes to long established neighborhoods by permitting increased urbanization and housing density as a ‘solution’ to lack of affordable housing within the city limits.
The Council’s attention was not drawn to the failing public bathroom policy within the municipality, nor with much effect to the need of shelter or a lawful place for the homeless to sleep–many of whom showed up to participate in the street protest outside alongf with a faction of @narchists. Enforcement of the municipal ordinances criminalizing homelessness within the city appeared to be on hold while its attorneys sorted out the limits imposed by a recent 9th Circuit decision ruling holding such ordinances in the face of viable alternatives (NOT to include faith based exclusionary ones!) were UNCONSTITUTIONAL, and therefore barred.
A number of old faces were seen at the rally, along with many new and fresh ones, including Peter Bohmer, Arthur West, Kirsten, Food-Not-Bombs organizers, Noah (an articulate young man), Phoenix, Joshua, and the ever-changing assortment of young feckless @narchists. Moses, unfortunately, wasn’t in attendance. A number of Antifa disciples, however, were in their ever vigilant hunt for Nazis, even the closeted or imaginary ones. A soliloquy was offered to one such, a diminutive teen girl inquiring why she had overheard the word Jews and Nazis in the same sentence, then seen reporting back to her companions. The example of the ACLU successfully defending the legal right of the American Nazi Party to receive a parade permit in Skokie, Ill. (where many jewish Holocaust survivors had settled after WWII) on 1st Amendment grounds was cited as a notable instance of defending someone’s right to express their views, no matter how repugnant, was NOT tantamount to agreeing with them. The girl seemed faintly satisfied or perhaps faintly disappointed. It surely wasn’t nearly as exciting an exchange or likely to produce street credits as beating up an alleged/suspected Nazi. In America, gratuitous Nazi witch hunts serve as substitutes for post soccer match European hooliganism and mosh pits.
